When you are pregnant or breastfeeding and going alcohol free, you can get very bored of water… or tonic water… or elderflower…. on indefinite repeat…..
At a party, at the pub or just at home in the evening sometimes you just don’t want another sweet non-alcoholic drink or ANOTHER glass of water… cue searching for alternatives that make you feel like you are actually having a ‘grown-up beverage’.
These were my 3 pub/party sanity savers that helped me still feel part of the crowd:
BECKS BLUE
Now, I’m not usually a beer drinker but discovering that 90% pubs actually serve Becks Blue (Becks’ non-alcoholic beer offering) was a revelation…. It’s a great alternative to all the sweet non-alcoholic drinks and it looks and feels like a beer in a chilled glass bottle. Other brands do non-alcoholic options but Becks Blue felt like the most widely available and it is still a permanent fixture in the fridge in our house for when you just fancy a drink at the end of the day but don’t necessarily want to crack into the booze.
SEEDLIP
If you haven’t heard of Seedlip yet, you’ll definitely start noticing it soon. It is the world’s first distilled non-alcoholic spirits…. Basically non-alcoholic gin that tastes like gin, and you drink with tonic, ice and a wedge of lemon… and it’s actually like drinking a gin and tonic! It’s not cheap as your still paying for the premium distilled drink experience (like when you buy a nice drink) but it is so worth having a bottle in the cupboard for when your other half pours a glass of something in the evening!
NON ALCOHOLIC WINE
….. I add this to the list with a bit of hesitation as I generally find most non-alcoholic wines to be quite sweet and syrupy (i.e. more than one glass and you’re back to craving a more grown-up drink) BUT I found that making a non-alcoholic white wine spritzer with soda water did the trick to take the edge off the sweetness…. Although I do appreciate it probably sounds pretty odd to water down something that’s already non-alcoholic!
I hope you have some great evenings and lazy pub sessions with these alternatives to ‘do you want another elderflower?’…. enjoy!
